Karen Leffel-Massengill knew at a very young age that she wanted to be an artist. Crayons and coloring books were constant companions as her family moved frequently and literally around the world.
Graduating with a BA degree in fine art from Florida State University in 1972, Karen postponed beginning a career in art for that of being a wife and mother. Life has a way of leading us down it’s own path and in 1981 she was awarded an associates degree in nursing from Northern Virginia Community College.
Karen’s passion for painting was revived after the sudden death of her husband, Lester Massengill in August 1995. A watercolor workshop in January of 1996 with Janet Rogers jump started a career in art. By 1997, Karen was a professional artist doing street art shows all around the United States, garnering numerous prestigious awards in nationally ranked art shows.
Along the way she became a signature artist in the Florida Watercolor Society and the Society of Animal Artists. Birds in Art, an annual international competition, has accepted her entry four times, twice in watercolor and twice in oils.
An automobile accident in 2016 necessitated the termination of street art shows. Opening her own gallery in January of 2017, Karen has enjoyed continued success in her artistic endeavors which includes teaching at Stuart Art Supply and The Lighthouse Art Center in Tequesta, Florida.
