Participants will learn the building blocks of painting while strengthening their artistic vision and skills. The essential use of drawing, mixing color and painting techniques are demonstrated in each class. Fundamentals using the notan sketch, limited palettes of color and color relationships, compositional elements like scale, ranging from big to small, structure in the rectangle and the use of the grid will be presented. Referencing images of great paintings from art history will guide our development of ideas. Individuals are encouraged to explore their personal interests through experimentation and creativity! Beginners to painting are welcome.

Palette: (glass or wood) the larger the better, NO paper palettes!
Plastic wrap for covering palette
Brushes: variety of sizes and shapes (rounds, flats, filberts), the larger the better.
Palette knives, metal with bent shafts for mixing (finger-like shape) and painting, avoid plastic ones Suggested painting surfaces and sizes: double primed stretched canvases or panels, heavy-weight primed watercolor or oil primed papers, variety of sizes: 5×7 smallest to 18”x24” largest
Cotton Rags or Viva Paper towels
Ruler: 18” or larger
Sketch pad, pencils, erasers, chunky black marker, and/or charcoal, for sketches and note taking
Linseed oil and/or odorless mineral spirits and lidded containers

Optional limited range of paint colors: 2 yellows, 2 reds, 2 blues, 2 earth colors, 1 white and 1 black, * Think of your selection of colors varying in temperature, 1 warm /1 cool yellow etc.
