Carving a Whale Weathervane with Dennis Del Mauro

Students will create a whale weathervane, not from copper or tin, but carved from wood. The student will finish his creation either in weathered paint or faux verdigris to simulate age. Both returning and new students will also have the option of carving a shorebird instead of the weathervane.

Materials Available to Purchase in LAC ArtShop – while supplies last:
• Good quality carving knife (single bevel) to carve your bird
– RECOMMEND: #6 general purpose knife by Knotts Knives of Salisbury MD
• Sharpening leather strop
• Medium cut wood rasp/file to smooth out the knife cuts
– RECOMMEND: Nicholson #49
• Sandpaper – final smoothing before painting
• Several inexpensive pant brushes (varying size of 1/2 – 1/4)
• Palette knife
• Apron
• Thin gold glove – holding hand to prevent minor cuts/abrasions
