Combine 2D and 3D elements in art by using drawing and modeling techniques to a create bas- relief sculpture. Using a picture or photo, students will learn how to transfer the 2D image into a clay slab. Looking at the different picture planes, varying their depth, managing foreshortening and perspective, the class will develop a 3D relief image on the clay surface using modeling tools. Preparation for firing and some finishing methods will also be demonstrated. Although it is not required, it is recommended that the student bring a table top easel to the class to hold the slab of clay at an angle while working. The class includes a 25lb bag of water-based clay as well as the firing of the student’s pieces.
