This Still Life Oil Painting Class will focus on improving basic and advanced skills by understanding and conceptualizing the light effect on forms. The skills that we will focus on will be:

  • Drawing: using comparative measure
  • Composition: working on understanding how to create dynamic compositions
  • Value: Identify and develop the correct value, which is key to a successful painting
  • Hue: students will learn the discipline to mix color by using a pallet knife to create color strings to begin to control hue and value.

Each student will bring a variety of items they wish to include in a simple still life with the intention of completing a painting in eight weeks. Depending on the size of the class, either there will be two set ups or students can create their own.

Curriculum:

  • Week 1– choose items to develop a pleasing and interesting composition. Develop a simple line drawing that is used to transfer the drawing to canvas.
  • Week 2 – Transfer drawing to toned canvas and begin grisaille underpainting to establish values.
  • Week 3 – mix strings of color and begin painting first layer
  • Week 4 – 8 oil out the painting and evaluate which areas of the painting need more development focusing on edges and detail. Depending on the complexity of the composition these paintings can be completed or can be developed further at home.

The instructor will both demonstrate each process and bring examples to show the class.

Barbara will work with each student to help them with personal development, guiding them to advance their own skills based on their current skills.
