Thursdays
Students will be able to read a novel and convey their interpretations and connections through writing prompts along with a visual artistic expression via painting, collage, mixed-media, etc. in an art journal format. The instructor will use writing prompts and Socratic Seminar discussion techniques to engage and encourage artistic expression through writing reflections and visual representation of the novel being read. These techniques will draw personal interpretation, understanding, reflection, connection to text, life, nature and use that personal understanding to create a visual art journal. This course is designed for all creatives who want to expand their ability to reflect and connect through prose and art. Novel will be chosen ahead of time and emailed to particpants.
Develop and enhance skills in both drawing and painting. Participants are encouraged to work with a limited color palette on canvas or heavy paper with the aim of starting and completing a new work during each class session. The students will work with the instructor in creating preparatory drawings and develop them into complete paintings. Learn drawing skills and apply techniques to transition drawings into harmonious color landscapes, still life, or portrait paintings. Learning will be maximized through instructor demos as well as individual attention for each student.
This is a class for the artist who is comfortable with their medium and is ready to take their work to a new level: Ignite your thinking about design, graduate from copying your subject matter to creatively exploring it, learn how to assess your own work in order to make informed decisions about necessary improvements, learn about different materials and mediums, express yourself more freely through expressive brush work and mark making. Demos and lectures will be on an as-needed basis, the rest of the class will be individual instruction. You will work from your own reference material.
