March 10-11, 10am - 4pm

Location:

373 Tequesta Dr. Studio C

Instructor:

Beth Bathe View Bio

Reductive painting technique using water mixable oil paint and limited tonal palette

Wondering what Water Mixable Oil paints are all about? Known for blurring the line between watercolor and oil paintings, Beth Bathe’s unparalleled style evokes feelings of nostalgia, like an old sepia-toned photograph. Beth uses unconventional tools including squeegees and cotton swabs, along with her brushes focusing on composition, values, edges, and drawing rather than color.

During this 2 day intensive studio workshop, Beth shares her unique technique with students. In the mornings Beth will do a demo and show how she uses photography and simple apps on her phone to simplify forms enhance value and emphasize composition. In the afternoon students will work from photos (either bring your own on your phone/iPad, or Beth will have prints to share).

Students are encouraged to use water mixable oils to get the most out of the workshop. Beth will have paint for her students to try as well as one of her prepared painting panels, brushes and other supplies for you to use during the workshop.

Workshop could be for beginners through advanced. Beth will not be teaching the fundamentals of oil painting (color mixing theory etc), rather her technique with just one or two colors. Students who have previously taken a class with Beth are also encouraged to attend.

Studio Workshop

Day 1 – Morning: introduction, hand out supplies and demo by Beth.  Afternoon: students will set up on easels and Beth will provide individual instruction to students. Students may gesso their boards for day 2/3
Beth will offer her demos for sale.

Day 2  –  Morning critique of paintings painted from day prior
Beth will set up and start a demo.  Each day demo will focus on different subject matter and Break for lunch. Afternoon will be students painting on their own with personal instruction. Last day, last half hour we will have a group critique and wrap up. Beth will offer her demos for sale.

Other incidental costs for students:

Demo paintings will be available for purchase from workshop attendees for $400 (payable to Beth Bathe via cash, check or Venmo)

Additional painting panels and paint brushes may be available to purchase from Beth

This class focuses on four essential tools for creating strong, expressive watercolor paintings: color, shape, value, and edges. Through demonstrations and guided practice, students will learn how these elements work together to create depth, clarity, and energy.

We will explore color by using warm and cool relationships to create mood and spatial depth. Shape will be simplified and connected to build clear, unified compositions. Value will be used to define form, volume, and light, giving structure to both urban and landscape scenes. Finally, we will work with edges, learning how to vary hard and soft transitions to create rhythm, focus, and movement.

This class is designed to help students move beyond copying what they see and instead build paintings that feel organized, expressive, and dynamic — with confidence in their design choices and a deeper understanding of how watercolor works.
