Beth Bathe Supply List:

Beth will be providing (extra $60 fee per student)

• One prepared hardboard panel for students to use(for day one), additional panels(for day two and three) must be purchased by students (see below)

• Use of Beth’s Cobra water mixable oils. She will squeeze paint onto individual paper plates for you to use.

• Three paint brushes (that student can keep)

• squeegees (2)

• Q-tips
• photo reference materials to use (or you may bring your own prints or ipad). She will also show you how she makes composition decisions using apps you have on your phone.

What student needs to bring to class:

• Painting panel(s) for day 2, Beth recommends acylic pre-gessoed hardboards such as Ampersand Gessobords and Richeson hardboard flat panels(which you would need to gesso) 9×12 or larger, one per day plus extras if you want. Beth recommends trying different sizes. Beth will have extra gesso that students may use to prepare their panels..

• Roll of bounty paper towels, palette or palette or Beth will have paper plates you can use

• Trash bag (like a plastic grocery bag)

• container for water (to use to paint and clean brushes)

• Apron (recommended)

• reference photos. Either a print or your phone or iPad will also work. Beth will also have photo printouts you can borrow of subject matter that is appropriate for the class

• Bag Lunch or students my order lunch from one of the nearby restaurants

Recommended Supply List

For this class, you may work in either oil or watercolor. Please review the supply list for your chosen medium below and bring the items that apply to that medium.

Option 1: Oil Painting Supplies

Painting Surface

• Please bring a few stretched canvases or canvas panels, 11×14″ or larger.
• Choose a size that feels comfortable to you, but keep it under 18×24″ for class.

Paints

Any brand you prefer is fine, but be sure to have a well-rounded palette of colors. Recommended colors:

• Titanium White
• Naples Yellow
• Cadmium Yellow Medium
• Lemon Yellow
• Yellow Ochre
• Cadmium Red
• Orange
• Alizarin Crimson
• Burnt Umber
• Ultramarine Blue
• Prussian Blue
• Turquoise
• Sap Green
• Ivory Black

Palette

• A flat surface palette with enough space for mixing colors.

Brushes

A good variety will give you the most flexibility. Please include:

• 2″ large flat
• Large, medium, and small rounds
• Flats, brights, filberts, and angled brushes
• Rigger brush for fine lines

Palette Knives

• At least one palette knife is recommended (available at Jerry’s Artarama and most art supply stores).

Paper Towels

• Essential for cleaning brushes and managing paint.

Medium

• Please use an odorless, non-toxic oil painting medium.
• You can find options listed under: Non-Toxic Oil Painting Supplies.

Option 2: Watercolor Supplies

Paper

• Bring your favorite watercolor paper in a size you feel comfortable with.
• Recommended: cold press, 140lb or 300lb, for a textured, absorbent surface that’s excellent for soft edges and expressive washes.
• Hot press paper has a smooth, dense surface that’s better for crisp details, fine lines, and lifting.
• Suggested sizes: 9×12″, 11×15″, or 12×16″.
• Please be prepared to complete about three paintings per day.
• Reliable brands include: Arches, Fabriano, Saunders, Strathmore, and Canson.

Board

• A sturdy board (Masonite or gator board) the same size or slightly larger than your paper is helpful for taping down your sheets.
• Since we’ll mainly be working at tables, this may not always be necessary, but if you prefer using an easel, a solid backing is essential.

Paint

• Any brand you enjoy is fine as long as you bring a good basic palette of colors.
• Tubes are preferred because they allow you to use generous amounts for larger washes.
• Daniel Smith paints are excellent.
• If you’re on a budget, the Turner Watercolor set from Jerry’s Artarama is a great option.

Masking Fluid (Optional)

• Useful for preserving the white areas of your paper.

Palette

• Be sure to have a mixing area large enough for blending colors.
• The Guerrilla Painter Backpacker Watercolor Palette (available at Jerry’s) is a solid choice.

Brushes

At minimum, bring three good-quality soft brushes with a fine point:

• Large (for washes)
• Medium (for general work)
• Small (for details)

Additionally recommended:

• 2″ soft flat brush for bold washes
• Rigger brush for fine lines and calligraphic strokes

Paper Towels

• Essential for lifting paint, controlling moisture, and keeping brushes clean.

Spray Bottle (Optional)

• Handy for rewetting paints or creating special effects.

Water Container

• Bring a sturdy container for rinsing brushes.
