Reuse, Rescue, Renew! with Sandra Donabed

Days & Times:
November 30, December 1, and December 2 - 9am-12pm
Level:
All Levels Welcome
Location:
373 Tequesta Drive - Studio C
Instructor:

Repurposing used materials is an effective solution to deal with today’s environmental waste issues. Fiber art also has a rich tradition of incorporating elements that would otherwise be discarded.  From the earliest quilted items, fabrics were often a way to use old clothing and leftover scraps from other sewing projects.  Today we see reused cloth in Kantha and Kawandi from southeast Asia.  We will challenge ourselves to make a work that incorporates recycled materials, be it cloth or non-fiber items.  We will share ideas, trade fabrics, and junk, and encourage experimentation as we make a small art quilt that will explore some new techniques and cut right through those old ‘quilt rules!’  Many examples will be included for developing new ideas. We will concentrate on hand-working traditions – embroidery, hand appliqué, and quilting- and how to individualize stitching to their work. So, no sewing machines are necessary. If you prefer to use a machine, you will have ample work time at home between weeks of the workshop.  This workshop is suitable for any level of sewer, artist, or quilter from beginner to professional.

Days & Times:
December 9 and December 10 - 10am-4pm
Level:
All Levels Welcome

Instructor:

The traditional Japanese art of katazome is ancient. Kata means stencil and zome is a form of the word someru which means to dye- hence katazome (stencil dyeing)  The basic process of stencil dyeing is not complicated. First, a stencil is cut and placed on a piece of fabric. Next resist paste is applied through the stencil. The stencil is then removed, and the pasted fabric is allowed to dry in the sunlight. Fabric is then treated with sizing is going to be dyed with pigments. Fabric is then dyed or the colored pigments brushed on. Finally, the fabrics are soaked in water to remove the paste. In this introductory workshop, we will design and create our own stencils (1), prepare our fabrics for stenciling, make paste resist,  apply the paste, and use indigo dye to our fabrics- students can bring 1 tee-shirt to stencil. Material kits are included with Tuition. To view the impressive list of materials that come with your class, please click the link below:
